I have exactly this same problem OP, especially with so many shows I'm trying to watch.

I have similar issues (only I don't watch trailers) but I wonder if it's the show, or my mental health tanking.

I have a rule that has worked well for me for the last decade: I only watch closed canon. I've only broken it twice, for the gayest shows I've ever seen (strangely, both started this year).

Arrghh, same. I think it's down to my depression, but it's hard for me to finish things. Even something as basic as just watching a TV show.

Honestly, being unsure if I will love it to begin with is why I don't watch much of anything anymore. Not enough free time for so many letdowns.

Same. I think for me it's that I just have ~bad~ taste in TV lol. The super popular streaming/cable shows that everyone loves tend to be the ones with multiple years between seasons, and I just don't like those shows enough to bother rewatching/reading recaps to catch up before the new season.

There are only a handful of shows I'm current on, where I can watch the next season without needing to refresh myself on what happened, and with a couple exceptions they're all network shows that tend to have less than a year between seasons, and usually no more than 5 months or so (and all but one are procedural type shows that don't tend to have huge overarching plots so there's not a ton to remember, anyway).

Yeah, honestly, I think we're currently in a low point in television quality. I think during the late 00s/early 10s (maybe?) TV was unusually good and now it's meh. The writing sucks and part of that is that TV writers can't seem to write compelling casts of characters (also, the trend toward shorter seasons isn't helping). Every season it's just like, "...Who are these people again?"

Sounds like my problem with Westworld. I had to ask my friend if I hated last season because I had a sneaking suspicion that I did and just couldn't even remember, and he said yeah I was not a fan... so I watched the first ep of this season and felt completely 100% lost. Like no "previously on" can fill in enough gaps for me. Yet I still want to watch this season and see if the show gets back to being what I loved... just... uggghhh I'm never going to if I have to rewatch last season, which I didn't even like, in order to make sense of it! Maybe I need to watch the whole thing from the beginning, but who knows when I'll get around to that when I have other TV show priorities. #firstworldproblems, yes, I know :)
