Huh. Wasn't the dude like 27 at the time? I get there is an age gap but like... "almost 30" is hardly an innocent teenager or something

They seem to be doing fine, anyway

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. People are so fucking judgemental about age gaps. I remember seeing the outrage on twitter. What twats people are.

I wish Fry and Spencer every happiness in their marriage but at the same time, every photo of them I've ever seen looks like a teenage boy (complete with bad teenage boy hair) with their dad and that's a weird feeling.

He was 27 when they got married, so hardly a teenager.

But also, some people are into Daddies ;-)

I'm happy to hate on him for being an insufferable asshole. He just comes across as such a dick I'm always surprised that people generally think really highly of him.

I adored him when I was a teenager (along with Hugh Laurie, in the 1990s). But he came across as more of an anti-establishment back then - queer, Wildean, made fun of stuffy British things and religious people who complained about swear words. But the world's moved on, and he hasn't.

Ayrt

"But the world's moved on, and he hasn't."

Nonny, that might be the best description of Fry I have ever heard.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to relate to him because he did a fair amount of work to destigmatise mental health problems back in the day, which helped me get diagnosed with bipolar disorder. So I empathise with some of his mood problems. He's slowly sunk in my estimation over the last decade and now I don't keep up with him at all, so I don't know what asshole things he's recently said.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He said something anti woman once and I think that's it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. I'm not judging either of them on any ethical grounds, but god they really do look like father and son. Which honestly could be hot, but in this case personally I find it cringe. That said, if they're happy then good for them and it obviously does not matter one single iota whether random people like me who don't know them and will never meet them think they look "cringe" in pictures.

Great comic actor; very annoying public persona, which has only gotten more annoying as he has become more self-consciously a National Treasure and Living Icon and so on.

Also I'm really annoyed about him playing Fiddler's Green in Sandman. And my annoyance is not lessened by the knowledge that the casting was probably inevitable.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC Neil Gaiman said he chose Fry for that part, just e-mailed him and asked if he'd play Fiddler's Green and Fry agreed. Note: I have no opinion about whether or nor he's a good choice for the role, this was just a bit of trivia.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you think the casting was a bad portrayal? Or did you just not like it because of who he is as a person?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a bad portrayal.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not find this secret sexually attractive at all.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What creeped me out was some of Fry's comments about youth in his biographies, then he marries someone who looks very young. Whenever a photo shows up it does give me the heebie jeebies.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck's sake, they're both adults

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but and as someone who is in her damn 30s but is short and has a baby-face and thus often mistaken for very young-- what a person looks like doesn't matter!

Also an age gap is not a problem when the people in question are literally both adults. You can't even use the ~your brain doesn't stop developing until you're 25 so you're still technically not adult~ argument in their case. They're both! Adults! Consenting adults!
