(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 09:47 am (UTC)(link)- Monetising fanfic infringes on the Fair Use clause of transformative work
- It brings a bad culture to a hobby environment - grinding, writing for the Big Audience instead of what makes a good story. I have seen nothing good of the commercialisation of Youtube.
- If it does become a custom among fanficcers, there's a chance publishers are gonna start charging licensing fees and shit, and I *really* don't want to see that.
- I don't have the fucking energy to do the fucking grind, whether that's orig-fic or something derivative. (Writing is an extremely precarious career choice.)
- Fanfic is Something I Do For Fun

I'm also not gonna shit on people doing it because it's the means of making cash/everyone has an opinion until they're in the situation (and even then your song may or may not change). So. I've also commissioned fic and bough non commercial Fanart/do-hickeys so who am I to talk?
But as a whole, I agree with these reasons for not charging people for fic.
It's also something I consider as a creator/artist. Like if my work was well known enough to have a fanbase, and I put my work out for free, how would I feel if people started monetizing it (be it through shirts, fic, Fanart, etc.). Idk. I'd like to think I'd be indifferent, go ahead. Do what you gotta do. But everyone is different and I might feel differently should that happen.
