I'm sceptical about this. I'd imagine some people make some money, but in the same way people start a Go Fund Me or used to put a virtual tip jar on their website. So, not enough to live on through fic alone. If they can do it, though, then good for them I guess? Meanwhile, I can go read ANY OTHER FIC IN THE WORLD THAT IS ONLINE FOR FREE.

It seems like the only way you could get people to pay to a substantial extent would be if there was very little free fic, but that only happens in small fandoms or with rarepairs, and if it's a small fandom, you won't have a large enough audience to be able to make a living, especially in the long term as people jump to other fandoms.
