maybe it's problematic to the undead?

maybe it's problematic because people me have been patiently waiting for We're Wolves and this ship is making us sad because there's no new content?

idk either OP.

What's the ship?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like Viago/Anton from the movie What We Do in the Shadows.

But that’s all I managed to scare up from a quick search. No idea on the plot, characters, or it’s supposed to be “problematic”.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I guess there's an age gap? I hear that bothers people these days.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like that kind of thing doesn't really matter when it comes to supernatural creatures, but eh, maybe. People are weird.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because Viago already has a girlfriend? But then there's an age gap there too.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
If you ask fandom, everything is problematic. Fuck 'em and go in. Ship and let ship.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is it problematic because Taika is now problematic?

If it's for any other reason, it's a bad reason

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Why would Taika be problematic?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Who knows, this week.

There are a bunch of people online who dislike him who keep coming up with reasons to ~cancel~ him but they're all dumb bullshit. Not to say he's perfect or has never made a mistake, because he's human, but as far as I know, he hasn't done anything *actually* problematic.

nayrt

jfc I'm so sick of this endless "cancelling" bullshit

From what I've seen, it's his role in Our Flag Means Death (straight guy playing a gay guy).

Other than that... who knows.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's old news by now lol, they've moved onto other reasons for hating him.

But the thing is, we don't even know he's straight. People are assuming, but there have been several times where he's specifically *avoided* saying he was straight, in situations where it would've made sense for him to. He's also said that he believes everyone is on the queer spectrum, and presumably everyone would include him, so that's kind of implying he's *not* straight. He's also talked about having crushes on dudes, but those seemed to be jokes, so it's hard to know for sure. The point is, it's stupid for people to get mad at him for being straight when we don't even know for sure if he is.

Oh god. This shit pisses me off so much - this assumption of heterosexuality unless someone explicitly declares their preference is itself pukingly heteronormative, and people feeling entitled to know about other people's relationships and sex lives. God I wish these people would STFO and GTFO.

Re: DA

ayrt

I totally agree with you! I'm sorry if it came across otherwise. I wasn't trying to say that he *needed* to declare how he identifies (because that's none of anyone's business), but that people shouldn't automatically assume he's straight just because he hasn't said otherwise.

I know he just got married recently, so maybe that's why, currently. To which I say, good for him, his sexuality is his and his partner's/partners' business.

Otherwise, who the devil knows, it'll probably be some other reason they're mad at him next week.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The Taika thing is mostly not really about him being problematic tbh. It's more about his fans online being annoying and causing a backlash. A few too many posts about how Taika Waititi is queering heteronormativity by his very existence.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
some trans blog unearthed tweets from 2013 where he's uh. pretty gross about trans people, comparing women in a beauty pageant to men in drag and using a Thai slang term that some Thai trans folks consider a slur.

it's all news to me, I saw the link on someone's plurk and was confused by the layers but also found Taika's tweets kinda gross in that, he was trying hard to be edgy and flippant. but 2013. idk what to think but without him saying something like, god what a twat I was back then, huh? then it's still kinda goss. but, yknow, blogs unearthing ancient tweets to be mad at is also a kinda weird thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
FFS, everyone was a different person ten years ago when it came to trans issues. Well, except for the trans people who'd already figured out they were trans.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-24 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because they're different...species (not sure that's the right word, but whatever)?

Or maybe it's problematic in the universe of the movie because the vampires and werewolves don't really like each other?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm stumped, too. There name's escape me, but I think that's the main vampire dude with a Regular Human Guy and in which case, how is it problematic? Like I've seen the movie and I don't recall a single instance where this pairing would be an issue.

Is it an age gap thing? Because one is a literally hundreds of years old undead vampire and the other guy is clearly a Regular, Adult Man. So what's the problem there? Is it because Vampire Dude has an old love he pines for in-canon and it's "a problem" to ship him with other characters? I don't get it either.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-27 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Not human, werewolf. Not in fandom so can't be of further info.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's because of the gay pirate show. If I'm seeing this right, it's the same actors who play Blackbeard and Stead? People ship the actors and any/every version of the characters they play because of that.
I think half of the issue is just because of those people?... I'm guessing??
Because they're shipping them just because they like them together in a different series and think all versions should be canon, and then assume the character and their dynamic is exactly the same as the gay pirate show. tbh I haven't seen anyone call it problematic, but I have seen people be very annoyed at this ship taking over their fandom because of who plays them.
...otherwise it's because one is a vampire and the other is a werewolf and people tend to become extremely stupid when it comes to imagined power plays that also have nothing to do with canon.
