I mean the other thing is that (a) he probably doesn't have notes and (b) to the extent that he does have notes, it's just going to be the same stuff that was portrayed in the TV series. That's the ending he came up with. It might have been better executed if he had written it but he's the one who gave the plot breakdown to the TV producers in the first place.

And this is (part of) why I find him ultimately highly over-rated as an author.

I definitely wouldn't take a bet on him having notes, you're right, but I think b) is debatable. I don't think it's just a matter of execution, except for Bran, especially since as we agree, this man doesn't have notes.

So the thing with GRRM - at least earlier in his career, I don't know if this is still true but based on the way things have gone with ASOIAF I suspect it probably is - is that his writing process apparently involved a lot of planning and envisioning and carrying the plot and daydreaming in his head, and then sitting down and writing directly from the vision that he had in his head. So I suspect that he had a good idea in his own head of what he wanted the plot to be, but hadn't actually written it down in the form of notes.

Then he sat down with Benioff and Weiss and explained everything within his head. So there were no notes, but there was a definite idea of how he wanted the plot to go, which he explained to them verbally. And this also explains why he's been blocked on the books ever since then - because he's said in the past that he can "talk out" a story and lose interest in actually writing it. Explaining what's going to happen means that he loses the creative inspiration and results in him getting writers block.

DA entirely

Not me, realizing my creative process is similar to GRRM. :(((

the "everything" is what I think didn't happen. he's been pretty explicit that they've killed or ignored characters he found relevant and uplifted characters who he intends to be dead. so at the point he told them (which was like season 4?) he knew they'd already fucked it up, because that's when he felt unwelcome and peaced, and so I don't think he told them that much***. it's completely unsurprising that suddenly he's all excited for Winds when the HOTD showrunners are running to him for detail.

***and, whew at me defending Benioff and Weiss, but like I do think some of the execution problems was that he simply didn't give enough even broad detail for how conclusory what he gave them was (i.e Stannis burning Shireen).

I think his actual foundational writers block is that his ending would have fulfilled his purpose of being a foil to lotr in the 90s, but now.....fantasy history has done all he wanted to do to the point where fans seem to know where he's going and he can't decide whether to keep with it or change it out of irritation, lmao.

I mean, if what you think was the case, he'd at least have fire and blood part II or more dunk and egg and lmao where is that? how fucking long have I been waiting for the she-wolves of winterfell??????

It's definitely possible that he didn't actually tell them everything and/or was already pissed at them and/or they'd already fucked it up! I mean we'll never know for sure. It's just fascinating to me that he's literally talked in the past about how much of a problem it is for him to explain where a story is going and how it can give him writer's block.

I think this is pretty plausible. It's really kinda crazy when you think it's literally been 30 years since he started writing the series.

TBH I think the main reason for this is he knows the fans would crucify him if he released any more side stories before Winds comes out.

I do relate to this, and could see how it would happen. And you know maybe "bran is king" was enough to kill it for him.

looool, you may be right. the way the reddit communities got excited when he even hinted he was progressing on winds. at this point, finishing anything would be taken as a sign that he could finish the main series I think

Oh no, I think he has a ton of notes. Just they're all world-building and history, not plot or characters.
