I really want to like Captain Janeway on Star Trek Voyager, but the writers keep on making her do the absolute actual dumbest shit possible. Why can Star Trek writers never manage to write good female characters (apart from Kira or Dr Crusher)?

Hollywood in general seems to really have problems with women in authority. They're almost always portrayed as bitchy, cold, crazy or incompetent.

DA - Or else so incomparably, effortlessly excellent at everything, always right, never needing help, and their only point of struggle is The Patriarchy and/or a Big Bad who is probably also indicated to be allied with The Patriarchy in some way. Which inevitably just makes the character feel extremely bland and also pandery, because they lack an authentic sense of interiority as a person.

(For the record--because I feel like this is where people's minds will immediately go: this is not a dig at Rey. I like Rey. IMO she is conflicted enough, struggles enough, and has enough ways in which she's at odds with herself to be interesting and believable as a person.)
