I believe he's intelligent, and he's certainly eloquent, but he's a great example of how those things don't inoculate you against adopting bad takes and becoming increasingly entrenched in them. The way I see it, yes, being intelligent makes one more likely to be able to differentiate sound ideas from unsound ones, but nobody is 100% accurate at doing this, and when one is intelligent and an unsound idea makes it past their radar, they may end up carving out an entire intellectual tunnel system around said unsound idea before anything that might challenge the idea even enters their awareness. By which point the psychological incentive to negate the thing that is challenging their position is pretty significant.

+1, there's a certain kind of intelligent, educated person (mostly but not entirely men) who is used to being able to think their way through things. When they find that they have felt positively towards something stupid, they can't admit they were wrong, they have to double down and show everyone why this is ACTUALLY correct and smart.

How has he come off as intelligent exactly? I'm genuinely asking because I had a huge chunk of my life where I basically watched the comedy channel 24/7 and while I was moving on to other things right when he /really/ started to become popular, I've never once though of him to be particularly bright. Like I'm pretty sure I've seen people call him that before but it was such a non-statement to me that I pretty much assumed it was just because of his accent?

The only distinct memory I have of him was when he was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. My friend went on a whole spiel about how he was a terrible person irl, and that was like all the way back in 2009.
