A lot of trendsetters don't get credit because they were outside the area they've become associated with or are considered to be too popular/this/that to 'count' apparently.
They're familiar, I don't know enough about them to agree or disagree tbh, but I've always had a distinct distaste when it comes to labeling a person/group as something that they themselves never publicly ascribed to, even if/when the term/idea didn't exist/wasn't mainstream/was defined by different standards/they fit the definition perfectly by todays standards. (and yes I do know they were classified as gothic rock all throughout the 80's.)
Like, I'm not saying you're wrong obviously. It's just a weird technicality I always get hung up on, that I feel is a lot more important than first meets the eye. That said, they're more mixed media gothic than true, imo. Just because they began and signed on as a punk band and only shifted their tone and image to Vanian's more gothic aesthetic after shifting up the lineup after their second album failed. They jumpstarted the punk genre and forced an interest in goth rock all the same, and they should be heralded for that. I just wouldn't consider them true gothic as a rule, personally, as they didn't begin or aspire towards that medium. They more or less fell into that genre, Vanian included, as a stylistic choice iirc.

So basically, I agree with both you and your friends opinion. They definitely should be touted as being one of the original goth rock bands, but their punk origins influence their work enough that they might not suit everyones definition of the genre/lifestyle.

They're a punk band that influenced the Goths. They still rule though, so people should absolutely check them out.

Also, their drummer is obsessed with the Holy Grail and spent a ton of time in France investigating the conspiracy theories about Rennes-le-Chateau which is a fun little detail for a band to have in the background
