I think OP is just being anti- sex work.

Ayrt

I'm still not clear on how that ties in with onlyfans doing well because of modern feminism, tbh.

hm....maybe because onlyfans is a representation of sexual expression and the monetization of it? and in pursuit of reclaiming our sexual agency and monetizing it we are still selling it to men who then reappropriate our sexual freedom into their sexual objectification? I don't know if this is what OP means but I have been thinking about this secret and reading the thread...

I mean, I fully admit that the sex industry is wide open to so much exploitation and some of the worst kinds too. But it's an extremely, extremely difficult and multilayered system in which we may never realistically be able to "solve" the problems. Like others have pointed in the threads and replies, society has laws that state when an individual is deemed an adult, and if the 18yo is considered an adult they are not doing anything wrong. And what does that have to do with feminism aside from feminism being a part of the complicated issues around sex work and living under capitalism?

NAYRT - I think this secret is a bullshit hot take, personally, but if I had to guess, I suspect OP thinks that because modern feminism promotes sex positivity, it's created a world in which a site like Onlyfans can be relatively mainstream, with a very large user-base on both the content creation side and the audience side.

They probably think if society were less sex positive, a site like Onlyfans wouldn't have nearly as large of a user base and wouldn't be treated with nearly as much legitimacy.

I...don't actually think all of this is wrong per se. I do, however, utterly disagree with OPs value judgements on the subject. Is something like Onlyfans viewed by the 2022 public, on average, as more legitimate/less stigmatized than it would've been in 2002? I definitely think so. Is that change in perception because of feminism and sex positivity? Perhaps in part--though I would argue feminism and sex positivity aren't even the largest factors in perpetuation this shift, let alone the only factors.

Do I think it's a bad thing for sex work to be seen and treated as legitimate by society? Fuck no, I am very much in support. Though notably, I'm also very strongly in support of sex work being legally legitimized at the same time as it's being socially destigmatized. I don't claim to have a comprehensive understand of the sorts of potential pitfalls and vulnerabilities which are created within a system that is denied legal legitimacy even while becoming increasingly publicly accepted, but I feel like it's probably a pretty thorny area.

Well thought out! I agree very much with what you stated. Feminism is not a monolith and neither is sex positivity.

I'm thinking of it like the "debate" about feminism and makeup.

Is makeup a fun and innately harmless personal artistic expression? Absolutely!
Is makeup also used as a tool of oppression and misogyny with damaging side effects to personal and mental health? Also yes.

It's not a matter of black or white, makeup-good or makeup-bad, sex work good or sex work bad--it's that both can be true at once.
