They definitely deliberately toned down the horror from the comic in the show adaptation. Maybe because it was too much tonal whiplash from the rest of the show that's dark but not that dark? I also noticed they decided not to show the rape onscreen in the Calliope episode so maybe it's a choice about how to depict or not depict certain types of sexual violence?
