I only correct spelling and grammar if the author has explicitly asked for it, and then I put it in a comment with praise and edit the comment after posting to remove the corrections, so only the author's inbox gets that version.

Wait a minute... when you edith a comment, the author still get the pre-edithed version of it?

Yes. The author will have 2 email notifications -- the original, and the edited version. That is, at AO3. Don't know about other platforms.
