The real thing is dire, yeah. But the aesthetic is just an aesthetic and enjoying how it looks without having to worry about the real life situation (which is a totally separate thing altogether) is easy. It's like enjoying cottagecore without actually having to worry about whether or not the thatched roof of your cottage is leaking, or if the rustling sound you heard in your attic is mice, rats, or bats.

Seconding this. But also, I think that fans of aesthetics posts tend to engage with them in a similar way to the way we engage with fiction, which often means that we actually enjoy the thought of the various problems and difficulties that come with the aesthetic in question. E.g. the thought of living in a cottage and having to deal with pests and leaks and bad weather is pleasurable, because it's so intensely evocative of a particular context and experience. It adds depth and richness to the mind's-eye fantasy. That doesn't mean we think those problems and difficulties would actually be enjoyable in real life.

There's a post on tumblr that goes: "Real life be like: PROBLEMS PROBLEMS PROBLEMS PROBLEMS. Fiction be like: Mmmmm, problems.

I think for many people mood boards function on the same basic principle.
