Are we talking about casual fans or Fandom here? Because, let's be honest, the majority of casual fandom is in it for the murders and missing persons cases. And honestly, for the most part, it's not any more ghoulish than the original coverage of the cases or the "based on a true story" crime procedurals that have been a tv staple since the 60s or Unsolved Mysteries or any of the other media based on real murders and kidnappings. The major difference is that the target audience is younger now.

If we're talking about capital F Fandom, that's a bit more diverse. It's also not inherently morally superior because sometimes the focus is on true crimes where the victims didn't die.
