Taylor Swift is not a diva and I say that with all love and respect in my heart for Taylor Swift. She's a pop star and songwriter, but she's simply not a diva. Would have made more sense to have Adele.

Outside of that, I'm not sure if divas today are bad or if Ariana Grande specifically is just annoying.

I wouldn't have considered any of the top women divas tbh. Decent enough singers? Sure, though I'm not as fan of a lot of their music, but diva is like... a whole different class to me.

AYRT Yeah I really couldn't think of anyone that immediately came to mind because a) I don't listen to a ton of modern stuff because a lot of it isn't my style, and b) it really seems like a very specific class of singer to me that is very difficult to live up to.

this may be sacrilege or whatever, but Beyonce is better all-around and specifically vocally, than Diana Ross. I wouldn't put her where Aretha or Tina or Whitney is, but Diana Ross? Absolutely. I do think Gaga was carrying on Madonna's ethos very well when she was still doing it. I think Taylor is carrying on Joni Mitchell's whole thing pretty well too, though I'm not sure either are what you would consider a musical diva.

I don't think anyone is really trying to be Barbra.

But I don't disagree that the new girls don't seem to be doing what the og girls were doing though (except beyonce who got in under the time wire imo).

I do think Ariana is very, very much trying to be a diva. or maybe just trying to be Mariah specifically

Yeah, I would definitely think Mariah and a little Christina/Britney is her closest inspiration.

I'm not sure if I'd consider Beyonce and Ariana divas, and Taylor Swift just straight up isn't one.

From what I've seen, Ariana Grande does have real vocal power. A lot of her songs don't seem to make particularly good use of her vocal power, but it's there.

On a separate note, I personally don't tend to care for musical artists who put a lot of emphasis on vocal power. I tend to find their music too big and showy to be very emotionally affecting. For example, as much as I admire the hell out of Whitney Houston for her immense vocal skill, her rendition of I Will Always Love You has always left me mostly cold, whereas the original version by Dolly has a subtlety and fragility that I find moving.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm just saying that vocal power isn't at the top of everyone's list of things that make a musical artist great. Personally, it's fairly low on my list.

I can't take this secret seriously because Diana Ross as a vocal powerhouse? She wasn't that. She was a great performer with great stage presence but she was not famous for having a powerful voice.

There's more to being a diva than a clean powerful voice too. Modern day divas are working it. But it is worth critiquing them. We have to make sure our pop divas are elevated. Flawed, but elevated. Can't let them slack.

Beyonce is awesome. I don't like all her music, but she's awesome and epic and so I hard disagree with this secret.
