Once we stopped banning the admitted under 18s from sites, things got a lot worse. It became impossible to get a decent set of consistent community standards. I was on a lot of sites before I was 18, but holy hell did I not admit it or give the mods reason to doubt it.

I'm tired so that sentence is making zero sense to me, but 'over 18' spaces were never actually over 18 only. Everyone just lied and kept their mouths shut. When your gate is 'click here if you're over 18', you're not actually keeping the kids out.

So making spaces all ages makes sense as long as people keep to ye olde rules of 'everyone on the internet is over 18, shut up'.

The point of the clicking was never to keep minors out it was to make sure that anyone who came in knew that they were supposed to pretend to be over 18.

I'm gonna sound like a real jerk or a grumpy old boomer here but.

I've seen a lot of frankly entitled minors in online spaces. And a lot of places where a minor just acts atrociously and the adults around them all gather to make excuses for and defend them when someone criticizes how they're acting


I recall on Tumblr a minor was calling people who shipped certain things , basically a word for "whore" or "slut" and they , rightfully in my opinion, got criticized for this. But then a bunch of people in their fandom ganged up on those criticizing them saying "look at these gross adults bullying a minor for expressing discomfort/concern about problematic ships making them uncomfortable!!!!"

No. They were calling people (specifically women) sluts and being misogynistic.

It feels sometimes like a minor in a fandom can just say anything they want and be seen as an innocent baby complaining about feeling unsafe and how dare anyone say otherwise

Don't get me wrong I'm not against looking out for minors in fandom. I'm all for that . But there's a difference between looking out for their safety and enabling their bad behavior towards others.

There are minors on Tumblr right now who’re referring to adults as “groomers” because the adults wrote explicit fic, clearly marked as explicit, and the minors chose to read it anyway.

Yeah, I have no problem with kids sneaking into adult spaces, but those are clearly marked adult spaces! Nobody should have to cater to some whiny 17-year-old who is upset that they read an explicit fic! Right? When I was a teenager in fandom spaces on the internet, we all knew that the cardinal rule of fandom spaces on the internet was NOT to admit that you were a teenager. You just kept your mouth shut about your age and tried to pretend you were an adult.
