I don't think you can really classify yourself as their friend, judging by this secret.

MTE. The person OP is describing sounds like they might be insufferable, but why is OP calling this person their friend when this is how they feel/think about them? Being disingenuous about friendship is a big nope for me.

I definitely consider the term 'fandom friend' different than an actual friend, but it really depends on how someone uses it.

Fandom friend to me is someone that I share fandom circles with, and we have conversations regarding that fandom, but that I don't know anything personally about them nor do I really care. Fandom acquaintance is probably a more accurate term but it just sounds more awkward to me.

Yep, this. Fandom friends are people I exclusively interact with via the internet/social media, based on vaguely similar interests in fandom. Basically, mutually following and occasionally interacting qualifies someone as a fandom friend.

*Rollin' in with some Fandom History*

I think the term "friend" makes more sense in context with fandom on Livejournal. Back then your FriendsList was a page where everyone who you followed's content was curated in one place. So your "friend" was way more just someone you followed.

I think "flist" has sort of been lost to "feed".

Fandom friend =/= friend. And I originally started interacting with them mainly based on their original work/characters (which I still like and support them for) - the whole fandom thing was something I kept noticing later, mostly because it was for fandoms that only recently got new material so it wasn't that obvious from the beginning.

They can be real friends.

NAYRT

Of course they can, but you can't make the assumption that all fandom friends are actual friends. The opposite is more likely, and it should be where your mind goes first.
