I will never forget the moment my own eyes read the words "Somehow Palpatine survived". Never. That was such a surreal moment and not in a good way.
(With the other ones I can mostly live)

They had a lot of ground to cover, ideally this would have been set up in the bridging movie of a trilogy, but that movie failed to do any bridging so they had to smoosh it into the final one instead. All things considered, given what it had to fix or set up, it is amazing that TRoS was as good as it even was.

... but can a movie bridge into something when they don't even know what they're bridging into? They didn't really seem to have a plan. I thought most of the rest of TROS was awful, too tbh, but I know others liked it. Different strokes.

No, look, come on. I know people try to blame everything bad that ever happened in Star Wars on TLJ, but TLJ did not force them to do the return of Emperor Palpatine as a Fortnite tie-in. Come on now.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well maybe if they hadn't glibly offed the new big bad for cheap yucks instead...

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. TFA didn't set up much itself, but the one thing it did well was the mystery and threat of Snoke. TLJ refused to pick up one of the very few actual plot threads they had. That is just bad storytelling.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They could have used Hux or Kylo Ren as a big bad.

And if you think that wouldn't work, and Hux or Ren wouldn't have made a good enough big bad, they could have brought back Palpatine in a way that wasn't incredibly stupid.

And if you think that *also* wouldn't work, and Hux or Ren couldn't be big bads, and there's no good way to bring back Palpatine, and JJA had no good ideas for a big bad other than Snoke....... then JJ could simply have told Rian Johnson that, instead of letting Johnson kill off Snoke and then doing a bunch of stupid bullshit in his own movie.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, love or hate TLJ but... Rian Johnson did not make that movie secretly behind everyone's back and then showed it to no one till it premiered. People signed off on that and if they had seen a problem at that point, they wouldn't have just let him.
philstar22: (Star Wars: kylo/hux)

This.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought at the time that setting up Kylo as the Actual Big Bad was a good move. And then RoS happened.
philstar22: (Star Wars:hux smirk)

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-08-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I liked the idea of Kylo and Hux as both big bads, with separate different ideas of what the First Order needed, and there being a lot of tension between the two.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! And sure, it's worth exploring the idea of "saving" Kylo, but to find out no, he's actually that bad (contrasting him even further against his idol!) was refreshing, in a way.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have loved it if they had gone in that direction.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know -- by the end of TLJ, Hux was pretty much relegated to straight man for Kylo's violent toddler temper tantrum comedy routine. He'd have had to level up in badass to an unrealistic extent even for Star Wars to sell it as a big bad.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It was incredibly stupid but honestly I could have dealt with it if they had gone really over-the-top and wacky and wild crazy space opera with it. Like if it was EU-level stupidity.

But no! It was the conclusion to the mainline series and they wanted you to take it seriously.
