A certain word is a slur in the US, but the preferred nomenclature of a that group in a different country. Do we handle this issue with nuance and sensitivity, or do people just start screaming racist at each other until everyone's head imploded in frustration and outrage?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
scream racist obviously because us values should be global values, because MURICA

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

and then Americans using the most awful slurs as names or in their song lyrics and reacting with such confusion when it causes trouble and heartache EVERY TIME

God remember being at the cinema watching the first Avengers film and Loki comes right out and calls Black Widow a quim like WHAT

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd never heard the word before, but I am assuming it's on par with cunt or something, and Loki is intending to be insulting, so why is the use shocking?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT It is very much on a par with cunt, which is precisely why it was so shocking in a film with a huge kid audience.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Do we consider Avengers a kids film? Genuine question because with the death and the murder and the hey hey ow it hurts, I would have assumed that it's definitely a teen-plus film. Like, just because a kid is watching something doesn't mean they should be, or that it's aimed at them, and also, if a kid IS watching something, I doubt they're even going to have context for a word like that.

That one’s straight up the same issue as when non-English speakers treat “fuck” as mild.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not at all on par with cunt. Not even close. The way he uses it is as close as it ever gets, which isn't very. Mostly it's an archaic word that features heavily in 19th-century porn and barely exists outside of that.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
that was a slightly odd case because even in the countries where it is known it's considered highly archaic

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it’s the kind of thing my conservative gran might find actually offensive, but everyone else I know just thought it was oddly old-fashioned.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it offensive to ask what this word is? I don’t even know how to google for it without more details.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just googled it mself by using the word and "meaning". Because Duh!

noun vulgar slang•British
a woman's genitals.

AYRT

I was referring to this:
A certain word is a slur in the US, but the preferred nomenclature of a that group in a different country.<\i>

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt
black people, n-word most likely.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Where is the n-word the preferred term of self-identification?

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Catalan, Romanian, Indonesian...
The word doesn't sound the same but close enough. As an ESL I do not even know what n-word means exactly because it's a huge taboo and I do not care that much about USA culture.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had to guess, "coloured" in South Africa vs "colored" in the US, but a) I'm American and therefore b) I'm betting there's tons I know nothing about. Americans also use gypsy all the time even though it's a slur.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
As a non-american, the only knowledge I have about the use of gypsy there is by American gypsies who seem like whole different culture than say, romani or travellers or the chosen nomenclature in other countries.
