I think parasocial relationships have become increasingly dangerous these days. I'd sure never want to be famous, at all.

Preach.

I'd love for my work to become popular, but if it ever got to the point I'd need to be out there and have my face and name known, I'd probably go Yoko Taro and wear a big mask everywhere I need to give speeches in.

And of course, bless the madman, give others credit for their brilliance and claim I only did shit, so I have no altar to be broken.

Same.

Does Garfield have parasocial relationships with people, or does OP have a parasocial relationship with Garfield...

(Anonymous) 2022-09-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the OP is a cat.

Seriously. This idea that any person is infallible and is responsible for everyone else's feelings about things they say and do (that are not things they should be called out for, ie racism etc) is gross and scary.

OK, Armie.

Human beans! *snicker giggle*

Yes, though, depends what you're talking about. When it comes to celebrities coming acts of sexual violence for instance, or being racist pieces of shit, then fuck their feelings.

But for huge amounts of other things, the massive level of intrusiveness shown by the media (and sometimes fans), yes, I agree, it's gross.

Yeah, I'm not enjoying the trend of finding dumb shit people said online in their teens to chase them out of jobs (I'm thinking of that Teen Vogue editor in particular, but she's far from the only one). I mean, I said a lot of incredibly stupid and ignorant things in my teens but there was no widely-available internet then so nobody can show them to my future employers.

NAYRT but agreed.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for saying it, say it louder for the people in the back. You don't have to go "uwu my cute murderous sexually abusive baby who kicks elders --" but really.

People really do project enormous amounts of unwarranted bullshit onto actors and other famous folk. And people don't even have to be actually famous to be hit by it - look at what's happened to various youtubers. :(

God the horror stories I have seen over the years on how people treat/view celebrities. I remember reading a comment on Livejournal's Oh No They Didn't forever ago and reading someone's opinion on why they thought that celebrities basically signed away their rights for basic privacy for the public's entertainment. And it was about wanting to know the in's and out's of things like their personal health or every little thing going on in their life.

That and reading an interview on the girl who played Cho Chang in Harry Potter and how this poor kid got death threats for playing a character who 'betrayed' Harry was the first time I realized that people could be so awful in the stupidest way possible.
