It’s not the genre norm, and it wasn’t the genre norm the last few decades of people complaining it was the genre norm. It’s the “lesbian space atrocities” subgenre norm, but that has not yet swallowed a genre.

The “lesbian space atrocities” subgenre??

Gideon the Ninth, The Traitor Baru Cormorant, This Is How You Lose the Time War, The Poppy War, etc. I think Arknights also qualifies despite being from a different country and medium than all the rest.

I have no clue what any of those are, and I still agree with OP.

"Lesbian space atrocities" isn't a thing, it's more so just that lesbians are extremely common in science fiction and science fiction-aligned storytelling of any subgenre for some reason right now (much more common than gay men are) (and it's not solely because they're more palatable to straight male audiences, because the fiction in question is not predominantly written by straight men, nor is it exclusively or even primarily for a straight male audience).

But, like, what I mean is, A Memory Called Empire and A Master of Djinn aren't atrocity stories, in space or otherwise.

To be clear, I don't mean that it's not a term that people use; I mean that it's not actually a discrete definable subgenre that can be separated out from the broader context of what is happening in SFF right now. It's a combination of several broader, bigger, secular trends, not a subgenre.

Um. No.
