Pick a state.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So which US state is quintessentially generic Americana? I'm gonna say Illinois. It has got a bit of Urban, a bit of rurality, it is midwest but with an tinge of Easterness and a fair helping of West Coast transplants, it even has Amish, and it has the full four seasons in it. Illinois is America in a single state.

Do you agree?

Not far off. I may be biased but I was almost tempted to suggest Michigan because it is a lot like IL but also has mountains, which is a thing found many places in the US.

(At least I don't think there are mountains in IL. None in lower MI either, but the UP has 'em.)

But then there are no oceans, or deserts, in either - and we're missing southern culture which is... a different flavor of Americana, I think.

It's really hard to sum up a country with so many regional cultures honestly.

Michigan is bordered by inland seas.

Oh trust me, I know. I've lived near Lake Michigan my whole life and therefore was rather underwhelmed the first time I actually saw an ocean. Looked no different except that there were jellyfish on the beach. ;)

Anyone from out west would laugh at classifying what's in the UP as mountains, I'm afraid.

Yeah, this is very true. But it's uh... more mountainish than IL. ;)

No argument there!

Missouri, Illinois or Kentucky probably. Maybe Iowa.

Specifically Americana, I'd say Michigan.

No way. Too flat, empty, and full of corn. Chicago isn't enough to redeem Bloomington. Iowa has the same problem. Try Wisconsin instead, because it meets all the above criteria, is less flat, and wherever you go in America, if you say you're from Wisconsin someone in earshot will inevitably say "I was born there/raised there/went to school there/have family there/vacationed there!" Everyone is from Wisconsin at some point in their life, however briefly. Or Minnesota, but there's a lot of Scandinavian influence in MN that makes it rather alien to most southerners.

LOL, I went to WI for school and whenever I say so someone else in the convo often turns out to be from the area / have family there / have also gone to school there etc. (even tho I’m living in a totally different region of the US now) so I can’t really disagree on that point.

I was gonna say Wisconsin too.

I spent a grand total of one day in Wisconsin, I don't think that counts.

I'm going with NSW. It's the sunburnt country in a nutshell. A pretty big nutshell, to be fair, but it's got everything.

If nothing else, Illinois is the most Midwestern state:

i know very little of america or "americana" but i know the west wing enough to love this dialogue:

vinick: "i have a one-state strategy: the one state that has everything - big cities, small towns, mountains, deserts, farms, factories, fishermen, surfers, all races, all religions, gay, straight - everything this country has. there's more real america in california than anywhere else. if i can win california, i can win the country"

jane: "that's a nice speech, just don't say it into any microphones because everyone else in the 49 other states thinks california is a giant psycho ward"
