from what I understand they started as kind of new version of Encylopedia Dramatica to keep tabs on "lolcows" aka mentally ill or vulnerable people who they found it amusing to bully and harass for amusement. Initially i've heard it was for stalking Chris-Chan an autistic person who's infamous online for being... well clearly mentally ill.

It's really sickening.
