(Anonymous) 2022-09-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)The thing about the romance plot is that Andie MacDowell is smart and knows all of Murray's tricks and is not going to fall for any of them. The fact that MacDowell ultimately falls for Murray is a marker of the progress that he has made as a person. Her falling for him is not the solution, per se. It's something that is only possible because he has already solved his deeper underlying problems. And we know this because Murray spends a significant portion of the movie acting as if romantic love is the solution. And it fails. It doesn't work. It unambiguously is *not* the solution.
It's only when Murray starts genuinely, selflessly helping the town, and when he learns his lessons about the meaning of happiness and caring for others and so on, that MacDowell actually does fall for him and the curse is lifted.
