I don't mind bland, Death's for example is quite classic, but some costumes are just not good, especially Lucifer's.

Comment OP here--Lucifer's costumes were designed by Gwendolyn Christie's partner, and the sketches aren't ornate or anything, but don't look too bad.

I suspect the costume shop budget extended to $200 at Joann's and some old curtains, though, and the actual sewing was maybe rushed as well, because the results are weirdly lumpy/wrinkly and don't fit her well, so they look shitty and cheap.

I'm not good enough at sewing to know for sure how much of the problem was shitty materials vs inadequate fittings vs poor construction, though, just that something clearly happened between design and execution.

Yes! I don't think costumes itself are badly designed. I actually do like all the 80s shoulders. But they do look really cheap. Probably low budget or something going wrong at the process

but that's the thing I guess, the budget, they have a lot of quite expensive things going on in the show. So I really don't mind simple decisions, but I really sad about Lucifer because I do like how Christie plays them

I can't remember the last show I watched with decent costumes.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
our flag means death has some pretty fantastic ones, even if you don't care for the rest of the show?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
came here to say the same thing!

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here and I'd guess it has to do with sped up production schedules, low budgets, and in some cases trying to do too much with c

Gah hit post too soon--trying to do too much with CGI, because unlike costumers, the people doing CGI aren't unionized and get worked to exhaustion doing stuff that practical costuming (and set design) can do better, but not cheaper.

Thanks for turning my comment into a secret, OP!

I actually wondered a bit if the costuming was deliberate as a way to nod to the effect of Dream being imprisoned would have had on the wider world. That without him there there was no dreaming to some creative soul on new and vibrant fashions.

Comment OP here, and if that's what they were going for, I feel like some heavy duty lampshading would've been in order. Especially because the pre-imprisonment fashions didn't seem notably more exuberant or interesting.

And also I think Morpheus' costumes are some of the biggest offenders. Yeah, yeah, sulky emo goth dude, black goes with everything. Where's your cloak covered in flames and sleeping faces, Dream Lord?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't give two shits what they're wearing or how their hair is styled. You people nitpick the stupidest shit.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here--I love the show, though? But I also love cosplay, and so far, if I was going to cosplay anything, I would stick to the comics. Plus, you know, "omg this new show is fucking awesome" does not a secret make.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nice for you. Do you want a medal for not giving a shit about costuming in movies/shows?
Pretty sure professional costume designers would absolutely love you for your glowing appreciation of their jobs.

Oh fuck off. I am obsessed with this show, I love most of the changes they have made, I am absolutely in love with casting, but we are allowed not to like everything about it. For example costumes.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-06 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here and yes, this exactly. It's not ruining the show for me, but if the costuming matched the writing and acting I would be ecstatic.

I am on my comics reread and I am thinking how sad that TV show just can't realistically match the absolute visual madness of the comics. So I don't hold most of the costume decisions against them. A lot of costumes just do not work in much more subdued TV show. And I like a lot of stuff: CGI stars in the coat, it was a good call, Corinthian's clothes, they are delightful, Rose' hair. But some parts just a little bit lucking, may be it was budget, maybe all the covid restrictions, maybe time frames. Still
