I've always wondered if part of these 'choices' are because the CCP have taken an interest in promoting him as a shining example of youth. Hence the fact he played a 'martyr' from the creation of the CCP in that centenary drama, and has really only sung rousing propaganda songs over the past couple of years.

His current drama was filmed over 2 years ago and apparently went through many rounds of censorship before it was at last cleared to air. Perhaps he just has to do these kind of roles if he wants to have a career, though I did recently see a translated article about his career and The Untamed wasn't mentioned at all, but things not yet released were.
