I wanna unfollow half my mutuals on Twitter. Her death isn't just about her as a person and your detached problems with the UK and its monarchy, FFS. I hate everyone in power in my country, and if one of them died I would be hopeful but also terrified of the unknown change to come. I wouldn't want people from other countries making light of it in any way.

People with 'problems with the UK' always make me roll my eyes anyway.

Why?

Because it's usually based on historical issues but other countries with similar or worse histories are usually given a free pass by the same people, or on modern attitudes that are definitely worse elsewhere yet those places are never mentioned.

None of these things are above criticism, and the UK certainly isn't. But it's fashionable to focus on the UK like it's an outlier, while ignoring the wider history and pattern of human behaviour across the world.

I unfollowed a few people and actually deleted the Twitter app from my phone after seeing the sheer vitriol from some people. (I've been thinking of deleting it for a while so this wasn't the only reason, or even a big reason. Just the straw that broke the camel's back, I guess.)

I'm not particularly invested in or saddened by her death, I don't buy into all this Paddington Bear "thank you ma'am" dreck, and have even giggled at a couple of the jokes people have made. But as usual Twitter brings out the dregs of humanity and it's extremely off-putting to see some people seemingly partaking in a contest of who can wish the most personal pain and suffering on the largely impotent figurehead of a problematic system.
