What are some examples of times where this has happened?

DA

I'd say at least in the UK there's more people of South Asian descent (Indian/Pakistani being the majority of them) than people of African descent - almost twice as many!

and yet

This big time. Compared to the US, our black population is tiny (3%). By far the biggest minority are Indian and Pakistani Brits. Yet you rarely see them in UK media.

DA - Hell, the whole push to cast a black James Bond has a similar US-centric feel to it, given that Bond is so fundamentally British and yet the idea of casting a South Asian Bond has been treated as largely an afterthought.

I'm not against a black Bond per se, but if they're going to cast a non-white Bond I'd personally prefer it be a South Asian actor they cast.

Fellas, is it US centric to be black?

Just say you don't like black people and prefer South East Asians, and stop trying to wrap it in a package that's socially acceptable by making it out like you don't want to leave out the neglected other races and care very much about a realistic ratio of minorities. Because James Bond movies have always been so realistic, right?

Lol and here's the asshole who thinks this is racist against black people.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
For real though. The lack of comprehension in that reply is wild.

DA, and ignoring the troll

Being familiar with both Sandman and Harry Potter before either were adapted, a tiny part of my lizard brain has always been like "huh why is this character black now." But that's BECAUSE, I've finally realised, there's HARDLY ANY FUCKING ASIANS IN EITHER! Absolutely takes me out of both.

As mentioned, UK. Also seen this in Germany where the biggest POC group is Turkish and there is representation, but there is still a lot of emphasis placed on black people even though they only amount to 1% of the population. This is also super obvious in political discourse where certain leftist groups tend to unreflectedly parrot American talking points.

Not a movie stuff, but I have a story. I am Russian and was asked to make a diverse "people of the world" advert. So I've used pictures with different people, but leaning a bit on Central and East Asians, because it's the majority of non-white people here. All Asians were vetoed. (also more dark-skinned black people were vetoed and anyone who wasn't thiny thin). So apparently "people of the world" are only black people (but not too black) and white people.
