I guess this must vary with different fandoms. I've seen militant atheists be a problem in some communities (let alone the youtube atheists!), so it doesn't totally surprise me.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say I haven't really seen this be a problem for the last, like, 5-7 years or so.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the religious ideas you want to express? Just stating that you believe in God? Or is there more to this?

A lot of my fandoms are very heavily LGBT+ as well, which of course leads to a lot of people being uncomfortable around the topic of religion. Of course that doesn't mean a person can't be both LGBT and religious, I am Muslim and LGBT myself, but the whole popular idea on the internet that being religious = being a bigoted scumbag really fucking irritates me.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I really agree with your last sentence. Most people I know who have some form of religious/spiritual belief aren't anti-LGBT (obviously partly because I avoid bigots!), and many are ourselves LGBT.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO the association in the popular mind between religion and bigotry mainly exists because of the large and very, very, very, very, very, very vocal groups of religious people who are extremely bigoted.

Yup. I grew up around those people. I still live with those people, since I live with my parents. I'm still religious, though not that kind anymore. But sadly that kind is often the loudest, the most vocal, and the most likely to show up in the news and therefore what people think of when they think of religion.

Yep. There is a part of me that is always hesitant to mention so much as attending church because of those obnoxious vocal people, who are so painfully frequently white Christian Americans (though hopefully we have little else in common, and whatever brand of Christianity they're smoking isn't something we have in common either). So I mean, I totally understand why, but it's still frustrating.

I remember someone flaming me in this community many years ago for being a bigot when I mentioned it, in fact, because they apparently could not fathom that it was possible to be Christian and not only not hate LBGTQ+ people, but actually identify as queer. More than half the tenor section of my church's choir at the time (including myself) was queer in fact...

Sorry, but in my country the loudest, most vocal, violently anti-LGBT people are the Muslims.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This makes me wonder a) what fandoms you're in and b) what you've been saying. Cause I haven't seen this at all, even when people do start talking about religion and make a lot of people uncomfortable.

You may also be taking the privileged position of "anything that isn't completely positive is an attack," because most societies talk about religion as if it's an unadulterated good. People have been traumatized and harmed by many religions. Asking people not to bring it into fandom spaces is reasonable, and you may be viewing that as "militant."

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to point out the secret doesn't use the word "militant."

You may also be taking the privileged position of ignoring people who've been persecuted or attacked for being part of a minority religion. Also, many works of fiction deal with religious and spiritual themes, including a lot of sci-fi, so talking about religion can be entirely appropriate.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
The secret also doesn't say anything else that is in quotation marks.... Almost like they're used in the same way....

LOL...

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is about the "As a spirit worker..." anon, right?

Re: LOL...

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
With Hebrew text and a reference to antisemitism, I'd think probably not.

Re: LOL...

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I figured that was a red herring. Not that antisemitism isn't real, but the most recent kerfuffles re: religion and spirituality (and I do think it's notable that OP mentioned "spirituality" first!) is about the "As a spirit worker..." anon, who usually follows that opener up with something giggle-worthy. The fact that this is done in threads that aren't about religion OR spirituality is probably what draws the less than positive attention, though.

Re: LOL...

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I think it's about, too. I figured the reason the antisemitism thing is just mentioned briefly at the end is because the secret is primarily about the whole spirit worker thing, but also OP is Jewish and has experienced antisemitism as well.

If that interpretation is correct, then obviously the antisemitism is horrible and I'm sorry you've had to deal with that OP.

As for the spirit worker stuff, that anon brings it up at seemingly every opportunity, and if I weren't laughing and rolling my eyes at them, I'd be telling them to piss of because it's rude and socially tone-deaf to push your spiritual beliefs into every conversation when the conversation isn't about your or your spirituality or even spirituality more generally.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OP outright says they're not talking about bigotry or preaching, yet people leap to the assumption it must be about homophobia, or the OP must be over reacting.

That would only mildly bother me if the secret didn't explicitly mention anti-Semitism, which is a pernicious problem all over the internet.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience growing up in Oklahoma, a lot of religious people (let's be real, christians) will absolutely preach and be bigoted and then be completely confused when you call them out on it. It's the same place all these purity fans come from. "I'm a good person, ergo my opinions are not prejudiced or bigoted and what I do is morally correct."

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
you're right about the antisemitism and you should say it.

but other religions? idk I see a ton of pagan rep in fandom circles, so if you just mean christianity and/or islam, well, I can think of a few hundred reasons why people of queer, pagan, and queer pagan identity would not want to see mentions of the very religions that oppress them. there's a difference between "can you not around me" and vicious anti-theism, though; likewise, there's a difference between pushing things in spaces where people have asked to not have to deal with it, and people pushing into your space to get mad at something they weren't the audience for. being an asshole is stupid no matter which end of the spectrum the assholery is coming from.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the point about anti-semitism is really any more (or any less) intrinsically legitimate than the remainder of the post, tbh

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
okay but when you bring it up, is it something that is actually relevant to the discussion at hand? because i've never seen people jumped on for discussing religious themes in a work that has religious/spiritual themes. the only times i've ever seen it happen were when people felt the need to come in and start talking religion in a discussion that originally had nothing to do with religion.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in fandom spaces to talk about fandom things. I don't want to hear about anyone's IRL religion or religious beliefs. Go somewhere else to talk about that.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
So a chitchat in a fandom space about everyone's plans for the holidays where someone mentions going to church hits a nerve? You go somewhere else.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-15 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That is very obviously not what they meant, but go off I guess.
