I honestly just liked Instagram because it was a quiet medium with pretty pictures, and everything added (stories, videos) makes it less appealing to me.

Ugh, that sounds super annoying. I wonder if that trend is why it feels like there are more shorts being uploaded on YouTube? Maybe it's just me. I skip those now because if I wanted to see that stuff, I'd go on TikTok.

I definitely think it is. The quick videos you had first on Instagram live, then the reels that appeared on Facebook and Whatsapp, all of it vaguely reminds me of snap chat, which i also never had, and soon enough everyone on every platform is vying for 25-60 seconds of your time for a follow.

I hate this trend too and I get suspicious of bookstagram accounts when all their reviews of a book sound the same. Makes me think that they didn’t read it and were just told to promote it using certain words.

I also feel the same way about Goodreads tbh. Except in that case, I don't think that they're being paid to promote it, I just assume that they're incapable of original thought.

Not that difficult if they all read the same YA genre where the heroine has to fight for her rights and then falls in love with the only "handsome" man of the story lol

Maybe it's unfair of me to judge TikTok but nothing I've heard about it makes me want to join. The book marketing aspect of it in particular, because they sound like a bunch of idiots with dubious taste.

TikTok is sort of impossible to define because it has an infinite number of different niches that the algorithm will zoot you into.

However, you are correct that Booktok is very, very, very, very, very stupid. You are 100% right about that.

It does seem like everything is trying to be TikTok these days - instagram with its focus on reels, youtube releasing shorts, facebook reels, etc etc. I'll admit it, I use TikTok and it's a damn black hole, but that's why I used to appreciate Instagram so much. Sometimes I just want to quietly scroll and look at pretty pictures ...

I also struggle a lot more with reels from a small business standpoint. v.v
