I agree. Although, i didn't actually find Angel that creepy until that episode that showed him pre-Buffy and showed him basically stalking her even younger self. Ew.

And we're supposed to think he's redeemable without working for it, but Spike isn't redeemable even when he actually does the work?

Mostly it's 'Angel mopes a lot while other people tell him he's working for redemption.'

And saves and protects people. And ultimately chooses to forfeit his dream of becoming human to eradicate a great evil.

Him and practically everyone else on the show. Although he definitely mopes about it the most. A+ moper, that one.
