Have you ever trolled and/or lied on FandomSecrets (or anywhere else online)?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of a survey, I guess? Had a discussion with someone the other day about how so much of what is posted online is totally fake and that the internet probably shouldn't be taken half as seriously as it often is.

Not really. I've definitely posted things in the knowledge that they'll piss people off, but I don't really come up with elaborate lies or anything like that.

No, I may have phrased things like my hatred of Sandor Clegane in a deliberately provocative way, but I have never said anything I didn't believe or feel at the time I said it.

I grew up in the era of 'nevrr put anything real on the internet ', so yeah I've lied about near everything online. I have a dozen identities, and I always change details when posting about real life stuff - my profession, my relatives, etc. I never lie when it counts though. For instance, I never claim to be medically trained or a lawyer or anything.

On some fandom sites I have burner accounts with different personas bc I had this weird idea that if I spread out my personality across different people then maybe ppl like encyclopedia dramatica and kiwi farms won't clock in on me as a target.

I feel guilty so I tell myself that on sites like ao3 I never use the other accounts to kudos myself .

Idk . It doesn't make sense when I just say it like that.

Nah that makes total sense. I do something similar. Tbh it just seems the sensible thing to do these days.

I didn't realize that people gave kudos's to themselves - I mean I can clearly see how, but it never occurred to me that its something people do.
I guess its because when I revisit fics I like by other people, I usually sign out and give a kudos every time as a guest.

I might frame things or exaggerate things to provoke more of a response, but it always does come from a place of truth. I don't troll, but I'm more of an asshole here than I am in real life.

Re: Have you ever trolled and/or lied on FandomSecrets (or anywhere else online)?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-18 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
That is all the very definition of trolling.

While I don't lie I admittedly haven't offered the whole truth before in various conversations online which in turn made me sound more interesting then I actually am. Brief bullet points on people's lives are often more entertaining then the full biography, so to speak.

I've definitely lied on most of the internet. On F!S I mostly just post anon and fudge details tho. It's not really a place where I need to talk about things I'd wind up lying about.

Re: Have you ever trolled and/or lied on FandomSecrets (or anywhere else online)?

I mean, I definitely pretended to be an adult on forums and stuff from the time I was like,,, 13 or 14. It wasn't even for porn (at least at first), it was for all the adult-only meta groups and shit. I made up this really elaborate thing where I was in college and working at Subway - I'm 90% sure that people caught on, but since I never actually said I was a minor and wasn't too immature and annoying I never got kicked from anywhere.

Sometimes I just want to rec a movie or show or whatever and make up a secret - like, I would have no shame saying what I'm saying, but I just want people to talk about the thing I'm into so I'll just fudge it. I don't TRY to piss people off, but sometimes it just happens lmao

Not that I can think of. There are times I don't have the spoons to be tactful in thinking about how to phrase something, though, and that sometimes comes off as more offensive than I'd intended :P

Pretty sure I lied about my age on various sites in the early 2000s to be able to register accounts for stuff. Like, uh, Neopets. I was a true rebel.

I’ve never trolled.

On F!S, I have responded to my own secrets as if I weren’t the secret maker. Mostly to try and stir up conversation. But they’re still pretty much just my own opinions.

On Reddit and other places, I do regularly lie about personal details including routinely changing my age, place of residence/birth, etc. But I don’t profess to have expert knowledge I don’t really have.

Re: Have you ever trolled and/or lied on FandomSecrets (or anywhere else online)?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-18 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Can’t say that I do! I’m not interesting enough for someone to zero in on who I am on Reddit or something, I don’t think, but if they did, I’m not an asshole who says asshole things or stuff I’d be ashamed of being linked to, so, ok.

Obviously I don’t want to be linked to my filthy fic, but it’s not like I use my real name for that either or post identifiable details there either.

I've definitely lied - can't think of anything specific right now beyond aliases and location (the early internet lesson of Never Ever reveal yourself online got drummed into me as a kid, which was probably a good thing since I use to visit a lot of chat rooms back in the day and would often get interacted with the A/S/L? question).

No, but I've been accused of it because people who had a different life experience than me didn't believe what I said...

I've gotten in dumb arguments here, but never deliberately tried to shitstir or lied about anything. And (I'm not lying now either) I don't now and have never had any social media accounts, and only ever post anonymously, so my ability to stir shit is kind of limited regardless.

Not really. I can be short-tempered and provocative, but it's usually true. Maybe a bit of lying for exaggeration. I dislike trolls greatly

In general, I've trolled and lied online. Did that in the 2000s and early 2010s from time to time in various fandoms. These days I'm mostly a lurker/random love bomber in my fandom spaces.

On FS, I'm my most honest here. I fudge or change details to my stories/situations so as to keep my anon status as anon as possible. I used to have friends who visited FS but I don't know if any of them still frequent here so I tend to keep my fandoms vague or I talk about a different fandom (IE "i don't trust Harry/Ginny shippers" is really me talking about how I hate Colin/Penny shippers in Bridgerton because I have a friend who ships both Harry/Ginny and Colin/Penny. They left the HP fandom ages ago but currently in the Bridgerton fandom and I'm scared they still visit this place and will sound off about the "Polin haters". A little too much thinking on my part but this is how I vent).

Yes, sure. In recent years, mostly just minor lies to protect my privacy. But in the old days, I definitely did more active trolling at times. I used to make up secrets for the lols, back when F!S was getting 25+ secrets a day and so many of them were bizarre and whack that it was impossible to tell what was someone's real opinion and what wasn't (though sometimes it was so obvious I was surprised people fell for them). They were generally silly and often designed more to make people laugh than to provoke controversy or arguments, but I could never really predict people's responses. At least one I remember thinking people would say "wtf, that's ridiculous", but everyone absolutely loved it and several anons offered to have my babies. I wish I still had my old secrets saved so I could post a couple of them here (in this thread, not re-submit them) as examples.

I dislike the kind of trolling that's nasty and aimed at provoking wank about racism etc etc. Also it's just hard to find humour in a lot of the world nowadays. And F!S has changed in atmosphere, as well as there being far fewer regulars. I think my old style of secrets wouldn't really get much response here these days. But I'll admit responsibility for the one a couple of months ago claiming to have a horrifying Andrew Lloyd Webber tattoo, heh. But I felt bad when people immediately offered to help with a crowdfunding campaign!! But someone called it out as created in Dall-E and fake within an hour or so, otherwise I'd have had to bust my own trolling myself. I really didn't expect people to be so nice!

Lied on f!s or posted a fake secret?
No. But then I've never posted a secret (or have I?)

Elsewhere? It's bad form to be honest on the internet. I wasn't raised that way.

ON F!S, no. I have not told 100% of the truth about some things, just because all my personal details aren't relevant or anybody's business. But why lie? The point of F!S is to talk about stuff that normally would be 'taboo' or whatever.

Same elsewhere on the internet. I have rarely used my real name, and often sort of skirt around my location, because private info is private, but no - no need to lie about stuff.
