Omg, I’m not familiar with the source material so I may be misunderstanding the secret, but I’m getting tired of that type of humor myself. It crops up a lot in some of my fandoms (I like indie games and tabletop gaming) and I’m glad the creators are having fun but… sometimes it totally breaks the mood and doesn’t feel at all like an organic place to put a reference joke.

That's fair, it wasn't enough to put me off. I think I either didn't get enough of the jokes and just assumed it was weird stuff or I enjoyed them. I don't remember exactly, it's been a while.
