My secret is I like the fourth movie. I like all four of them. Not sure if I'm excited about the fifth or not because I think Harrison might just really be too old this time. But we'll see.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was bad, but not for lack of ideas or Ford being too old; it was bad because the middle 40% of the movie suffered from a confusing plot, bad direction and bad use of effects. Basically all of the stuff in the jungle.

I also don't totally understand why there aren't a lot of other adventure franchises out there. I guess the reality is that the movie-going public doesn't go to see adventure movies anymore unless they're AAA quality, perfect direction, great effects, lots of well-known stars, and even then it's iffy.

Two and four of the franchise were awful (imo). I loved the other two. I can't imagine a fourth. The last time I saw HF on a talk show, he seemed...kind of out of it. Like...beginning stages of dementia out of it. Maybe it was just a bad day for him, who knows. But...I agree. A fifth would not be great.

2 wasn't a bad movie per se, so much as it was extremely racist

I didn't find the story that interesting, and the racism pretty much killed the rest.

It had a lot of great dark horror moments, and Short Round was awesome.

But yes, the racism is pretty much an insuperable problem.

Ha, well...the 'spunky kid' character has never been a favorite of mine.

It was racist and that screaming blonde drove me fucking nuts.

Yeah I hated her so much. I went to a special preview of the movie and I told my friends it was bad and racist and at least one of them got mad at me when he saw it and thought it was good.

Her and the other screaming blonde from "A View to a Kill" drove me nuts.

I remember almost nothing from View to A Kill but I'll take your word for it.

God, Kate Capshaw was horrible. Her true calling was being Spielberg’s wife.

Yeah, I only like 1 and 3. I used to think nobody else could be Indy, but Jack Quaid from The Boys would be good, I think.
greghousesgf: (Ewww!)

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2022-09-22 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope she fucking made Spielberg happy, cause she sure didn't make me happy....

I really liked Marion in #4, I would definitely watch a movie about her adventures.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Marion and Blanchett's villain in 4 made the movie for me. I don't even care about the rest of it, I enjoy it just for those two.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Marion was the only reason I watched the fourth movie.

Eh.

Performance wasn't the problem for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It's true Ford could have stood to have been a little more engaging, but if the story had been good, the performance he gave would have worked in the context of the character truly being world-weary. But the story was not good, CGI was overused, the entire character concept of Mutt was ill-advised (not that fact that a son existed, just his personality and character traits were all so grating), the big stunts were baffling, and the climax fell flat. Your note at the bottom made me wonder anew why Indiana Jones didn't go a for a mummy story.

This is a good take.

The climax of Crystal Skull was fine, IMO. I mean, it's essentially the same plot conclusion as Raiders, but it's a classic for a reason.

I think the franchise just needs to be retired.

Unfortunately, it's Hollywood, so they're going to milk it for all the money they can, and then keep going regardless.
