For me, I'm generally in fandom for the stuff that I DON'T get from canon itself, which is usually... shipping.

Like, I love my current fandom's canon's plot. The character development we've been getting is juicy and great and the plot twists have been fun. But BY GOD I just want to see A and B kiss already because they are oozing sexual tension out of every pore!

This! I'm in fandom for the m/m action because it's virtually no-where in the canon that I enjoy.

Big same-- there's some gay content out there that I just DON'T care about (I'm happy for people who get something out of Heartstopper, it's just not for me). Shippy fanworks and discussions let me enjoy the characters I care about from shows/movies about monsters, but kissing other men. Yeah, there is a lot of other interesting stuff out there... but this is the thing I need to create for myself.

Yup. Exactly.

Yeah, I was in a tiny fandom that ended with a perfectly wrapped-up ending for the main characters front and center, and it had pretty much been a foregone conclusion that it would end that way for them because it's not an edgy canon that pulls twists and downers.

So of course there was a large part of fandom talking more about the surprises we got for the side characters and speculating about them because they had more loose ends. It wasn't because we didn't love the main characters (as some of their bigger fans accused us) it was that there was just nothing more to say about them that canon hadn't.
