Yes, we are projecting a lot of the time.

Also, you seem to be confused about the term "headcanon."

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure they are - headcanons imply fiction, OP is talking about real people.

I mean, thinking of how I'd phrase things - I wouldn't say I headcanon [famous celebrity] being gay, but I might suspect he is / I wouldn't say I headcanon [other famous celebrity] as having [specific mental illness] but I might say [behaviour] is evidence they might.

Is tinhattery equivalent to headcanon? I'd say no.

Fair.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, some fans do use the term "headcanon" for real people.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. People project enormous amounts onto famous people, and I agree, it bothers me how much some people seem to believe in their projections as fact.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate this too!!

(Anonymous) 2022-09-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it too. What gets me about it is that we've all had people make assumptions about us based on very little evidence and their own biases, so we should all know how it feels, but people keep doing it anyway.

I mean, if someone imagines two real people are dating and writes a fic about it (important part here being real person *fiction*), no big deal. But when they insist that it's reality, fuck that.

If by faves the secret means RPF then I do not see a lot of projecting. LoTR, SPN and Korean pop fandoms treat RP as fictional characters because they are fictional for the purpose of fic writting. They might be inspired by the samallest thing.
Overall this secret looks like another anti RPF take.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it is about RPF, because everyone is aware that that is fiction, just like it says on the tin. There are people who insist that their ideas about their favourite celebrity are how they really are in real life, I think this secret is about them.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
No, it doesn't. It's pretty clearly about people making up stuff about actors' lives and insisting it's reality.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-23 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I took it for a bash on RPF too. It kind of sounds like it morally objects to making life for a real-life person harder in some way, or something along those lines... but it doesn't mention any such actions (such as spreading crazy rumors), only just making up stories in one's head.

Personally, I don't really care if you think Zendaya is BFFs with Charles Manson, or that Sam Smith and Johnny Depp are raising a cat together (or whatever people make up). Yeah, it's a little weird (and depending on the occurrence and severity, possibly unhealthy) but as long as you're not creating conspiracy websites, going around insisting others believe your theories or actually harassing the celebs for not conforming to your delusions, then I really don't care what you make up in your mind. I don't care. It's your mind, and I don't have to be there.

I say this as someone who can't stand RPF.

OP

This isn't about rpf, it's about the people I've seen making up stories and conspiracy theories about celebrities based on little or no evidence and insisting that it's all true. Think "this person is clearly in an abusive relationship because I don't like their spouse" or "these two dudes are clearly in love because they acted suggestive for the cameras years ago before they both married other people" or stuff like that
