but it's very clear from the youtube titles that people are balls to the wall weird-angry about it and I just don't get it? i understand if you don't like this galadriel at all, but the complaints are like "she's not like lotr galadriel!!!!!!!!" No? That's what a prequel is? There's a lot to suggest she's pretty recalcitrant in appendix stuff?
Also....look. The fact of the matter is that even people are do their damnedest not be racist and deplore white supremacy live in worlds that go hard teaching symbolic concepts of it. Do I think Tolkien was racist? Much less than many similarly situated people in his time! Do I think he reproduced white supremacy in his world? Yeah. And I think if you admire the type of person Tolkien was, then maybe consider that if he'd lived long enough to have that pointed out to him, he would, like other authors who try to be better than the world they grow up in, appreciate just rewriting that narrative. None of it is so important to his themes that it ruins Tolkien to not reproduce it.

This. People are just... so fucking mad, far more so than is normal or necessary. Any quibbles with plot or characterisation could be mitigated by just thinking creatively about it for a few moments. I understand it's tiresome for people with 'legitimate' concerns to constantly be called racist or misogynist, but when all the other complaints have been rationalised and you're still fucking furious, there kind of isn't anything LEFT for you to be angy about except the existence of brown people and/or women in your previously white-leading fantasy?
At this point LotR fandom reminds me of Star Wars fandom. Any new media in the worldspace will be met with howling hostility unless it's a bland scene-for-scene recreation (preferably centering on male gaze and power fantasy). When you despise 80% of your fandom's IP, maybe it's time to take a step back.
