Streaming Services (inspired by #4)
(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)There are basically 7 big players in the US subscription streaming market: Netflix, Disney+ / Hulu, Amazon Prime, Peacock, Discovery+ / HBO Max, Paramount+ and AppleTV. Which of those is worth it to you, and which is total crap? How many are you willing to subscribe to and how do you pick? Which are going to stick around, and which are going to fade away?
Re: Streaming Services (inspired by #4)
That's the one I have, but I have a 7 year old and really like sports
Re: Streaming Services (inspired by #4)
I have a feeling a lot of these other services won't survive past the streaming-boom.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)It doesn't have a lot of the big shows but with seven major streaming services you're not going to keep up with all the big shows anyway, and Youtube has enough tolerably-legal old reruns and perfectly serviceable new youtube-only stuff that I'm never lacking for background noise. Also a lot of the streaming network shows have the most recent episode free anyway. (If I want to marathon a prestige show, the public library still has seasons on DVD.)

Hulu + Disney Plus is great, except for some nitpicks I have about the player.
Amazon Prime isn't worth it on its own. The layout is atrocious.
HBO Max is okay. I think Discovery might kill it.
Never used Paramount. Do have Peacock and it is good for its old horror stuff.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 01:54 am (UTC)(link)I've seen people make this complaint and I genuinely don't understand it. My "to watch" list on Netflix has well over 100 movies and shows on it and I'm constantly adding more. Even if I only watched one show a month, it would take me a few years just to get through my current list of things I want to see.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)HBO Max is clearly the best service right now and it's not even close. But apparently the company is planning to destroy it or whatever, so that's too bad. Netflix and Hulu are both pretty mediocre and I mostly use them for access to older TV shows I love that only live there. Their originals are very hit-or-miss with the emphasis on "miss". I wouldn't pay for Netflix for myself. Amazon Prime is basically fine and I have it because I have Amazon Prime anyway, their originals are pretty crappy though.
I've thought about giving Paramount+ a try if I want to add another one. At least they have Star Trek but IDK really what they have past that. I mostly don't want to watch Star Wars or MCU so I have no interest in Disney+ and everything I've heard about Peacock is pretty lackluster.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)I feel like once hulu partnering with disney and ESPN proves that moving away from cable was not the answer and hubs are it, we're going to move back to cable and meld all the services into one hub like it should have been all along. we refused to pay for disney but now it comes free with hulu, so we caught up on 1 good series, 1 mediocre shoulda-been-a-movie, and three terrible movies and are certain we'll never pay disney for shit.

Re: Streaming Services (inspired by #4)
I use a friend's Hulu (they're cancelling soon), and the interface is utter dogshite. They do have some very good original programming on there (Reservation Dogs, Only Murders in the Building....)
I've been on Disney+, it's....i dunno. Most of the content is not stuff i'm interested in. Too much reality crap, and I'm not at all into most of Disney's stuff.
Have not used/watched any of the others. I have zero ideas about if any will die or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)Peacock isn’t bad, but it only has two shows that I like, so I’m getting rid of it after the free trial is over.
This one isn’t on there, but I used to really like Crunchyroll until they merged with Funimation (the second time) and started listing all the dubs as seasons. It’s annoying and their app seems to crash more often now. Plus they don’t have any closed captioning on any of the titles that transferred over from Funimation.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)I'm not from the USA and incredibly enough the selection of movies, especially the "cult" movies is fairly good. They have a ton of good Anime and cartoons (I watched Avatar and Korra this summer!), too. I'm also interested in a few of their still running original shows: Cobra Kai, Umbrella Academy, Sandman and whatever they put out during Halloween. I think that October is the best month for Netflix and I'm waiting of some shows/movies now, but I'm totally biased since I'm a huge horror fan.
Speaking of which, my country's selection of horror movies is abismal. There are a couple of good movies from the 80's, but overrall it's just embarassing what they have in there. Some of their original shows though are fantastic (Midnight Mass, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Haunting Hill, etc).
I watch A LOT of horror movies because it's my favourite cinematic genre, so I end up torrenting a lot. If we had that horror only streaming service here I'd probably be subbed to that only.
I tried Amazon Prime, but I REALLY don't like the intervace. I don't find it appealing at all and I can't find any interesting movies even though their catalogue is pretty good. They have some good horror movies here, but I watched them all in about a month, so not worth keeping.
I don't have Disney+ and have never tried it because I'm not interested in Marvel anymore and I was never a fan of Star Wars. I like their cartoons, but not enough to subscribe to the service.
(Bonus: I try not to give money to Jeff Bezos and Disney if I can)
I even tried a streaming service from my country that has mostly local movies and reality TVs and. BOY. IT WAS BAD. Still, a funny experience.
BTW the movie I'm most hyped about this year is Del Toro's Pinocchio. And it's going to be on Netflix!
The show I'm mostly hyped for is Chucky season two, but I'm going to have to torrent it because it's not going to air or stream anywhere here. Then I'll probably buy the DVD if the season is good. I have the first season's DVD and I watched it three time already. SO GOOD.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)Fellow pirate going "arr". Got the whole bundle (solarr, radarr, prowlarr, jackett), paired it with qbittorrent and jellyfin, and now I get automatic downloads of new episodes I can stream from any of my devices. Setting it up was a PITA but now it's just smooth sailing into the horizon.
