(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)"I want to have the Baby-Killing Evil Sword on my play-through!"
Then get it.
"But I want to RP as a good character!"
Ok, then theme it as an Evil-Baby Killing Sword. Or get a mod if you have to do evil to get it. Or you inherited it and you're trying to redeem yourself.
"No, I want a Goodest Boy Sword with all the EBK Sword stats!"
Tough.
"But my IMMERSION!"
Lather rinse repeat. People set their own restrictions and then whine that the material doesn't support it.
"Why can't I kill everyone I meet?" Because we need NPCs to tell stories.
"Why don't I get the whole store's worth of merchandise when I kill the shopkeeper?" Fuck you.
"Wahh I can't keep the sadistic serial killer on my team while playing the angel play-through!" Yes you can, which is hilarious, I love you WOTR.
The second thing I hate is when people make decisions that make play harder in shared games. Especially LARPs but MMORPGs or tabletop games probably get it too.
"My evil character would totally target all the new characters! They're helpless and have good stuff!" Picking on new players isn't fun for them, they're likely to stop playing which will kill the game.
"I don't want to check in with other players before initiating combat with their character! It'll wreck the flow of my threats!" It's important to make sure everyone's having fun otherwise it's just bullying with costumes.
"Why should I have to ask before bear hugging or picking up another player? They should be used to it and it's what my character would do!" Please Don't Fucking Touch Me.
"Why should I be quiet around the sleeping area? I want to sing and fight until 4AM that's why I'm here!" Shut the fuck up, we have to drive home on Sunday. Go party in the Tavern.
BUT MY IMMERSION! Imposing any rule in the game system is forcing their play into a shape they don't want and that's stifling their creativity! Their experience! Their enjoyment!
Tons of people use the word without being jerks but it's happened so often that my reaction is getting a little outsized.

Sometimes I'm sad I don't have anyone to play with, but maybe there's some benefit to keeping to myself in online games.

...This sounds just like recurring experiences I have with "real people" at anime conventions......

(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)I try to communicate something as simple as needing sleep because I'm a human adult or that touching people without their ok is rude and I get push back. I'm ruining their game! I'm a touch starved sex-obsessed American! If I were a real LARPer I'd be fine with getting groped by strangers on zero sleep so it's my problem not theirs.
It's like they can accept these ideas in "real life" but as soon as we're in a space where they feel empowered they don't think those rules should apply any more.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)In RL, I think that's called entitlement. I get that it's a game, but that doesn't mean you put your courtesy for other players on hold...jeez. But I've also only played half a short campaign of DnD, so my experience with RPG is limited. I thought the whole thing was yes, you create a character, but they have a specific space/role to inhabit. It just doesn't make sense to act like what you're describing if you're trying to have a whole game.

Oh, you totally can. But expect to be punched in the face and kicked in the groin for it. Don't complain, it's what MY character would do.
