A friend of mine has been in TMNT fandom since the 90s, luckily she has found a niche such that she reports most of this stuff to me with incredulous laughter, but yeah, it sounds bad even by modern fandom standards.

(She's also taking joy in that a lot of baby TMNT fans have just discovered their whump kinks for the first time, though. It's not all bad!)

oh my gosh, yeah, there's so much whump in ROTMNT fandom, which is absolutely not surprising after THAT movie haha. you'd think people, who love reading/writing/drawing character's deaths, injuries and torture would be more cool about brothers kissing, but Nope™.

if your friend could kindly share where the cool peeps of older TMNT fandom hang out nowdays I would be so gratefull, but of cource only if they wish ♥

I think it's mostly whitelisted discords unfortunately and I'm not sure how to pass that on anonly, I only hear about it secondhand via her so I don't know much :( but they are out there! some of them are even active on Tumblr!

I am the friend who has been in tmnt fandom since the mailing list days.

Skip Twitter. Highly performative Rise!fans gather and mass to attack proshippers and neutrals there. They're currently attacking (another) storyboard artist there.

On tumblr, there is a fair mix of antis and proships and neutrals. If you tag search tcest, you will easily find who to block and who to follow.

On AO3, the antis are tagging themselves/their fics by including "tcest dni" (do not interact) in their tags. This is helpful because, generally speaking, anyone with knee-jerk censorship/judgemental inclinations tends to have underdeveloped writing skills. You'll save yourself from many poorly characterized fics by skipping them.

I recommend the turtle fics of hummerhouse, goblincatkc, aceofhearts61, echokazul, thekumquat, fireworksinthenight, crowdog, hamstermastersamster, winnychan, suthnmeh, taizi, kameterra, ulisabarbic, kyabetsu, phishtar, dubpubs, and theherocomplex. Then check their bookmarks for more good reads, their comments for other thoughtful/tolerant authors, and profiles for social media handles.

Hummerhouse has the same username on tumblr as on AO3 and her friend/follow list are going to be proship & neutral. Of the authors above, some have left the fandom, but have social links to those of us who stayed. Winnychan passed away the winter of 2020. She left a hole in fandom that will never be filled, but she deserves to have her works live beyond her. (GNU, you know?)

But yeah, fic recommended are all well-written. Some are gen, some het, some tcest. They're all tagged correctly and by well-rounded fans.

Good luck, friendo!

OP here again, literally thank you for my life, I didn't expect so much recs, I'm so thankfull right now I'm tearing up. I hugelly appreciate that you took the time to reply, honestly no words, thank you so so much!

I'm from Europe and lost my previous connections to tumblt tmnt fandom since I changed accounts since then and stuff, and currently all my friends are on twitter, so that's where I first tried to look for it - big mistake apparently, eesh. I was JUST moping today about having to search for a new rotmnt circle to follow, and now I know what to do thanks to you! ♥♥♥

Lmao, I spent this whole thread wondering what could be so problematic about TMNT to warrant lots of antis and it took until THIS comment for me to remember that they're all brothers.
