I do. I like the campy freewheeling fun of his books.

The real question here is: how do you do Ghibli films wrong?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ask Harvey Weinstein.

Seriously true.

The Cat Returns is one of my all-time fav Ghibli movies. It's just such a charming little fairy tale. Maybe it's not as ""sweeping"" or ""deep"" as people can choose to read other films to be, but it knows exactly what it wants to be and hits all the notes you want for a story like it. Plus it's full of cats! And a snarky crow! What's not to love?

My mom can't get over the "I want to be your tampon" thing.

Who among us has not talked the absolute dumbest shit while half sloshed on a lovey-dovey phone call?

She's lapsed Catholic, I think it kind of traumatised her.

I've got mixed feelings about this. The recent flood of secrets has been nice, and some of them are funny. But I feel like they're probably artificial, as opposed to being sincere and genuine secrets that happen to be highly entertaining.

I mean this is true to some extent but also The Prisoner was literally shot at a coastal resort and tourist village

It's not necessarily that neo-liberalism is a living nightmare, although it is; it's also that the Village is fundamentally a rather nice resort where you can live full-time without paying for anything, and also somewhere in the background Patrick McGoohan is being psychedelically tormented.

Wait, people don't like The Cat Returns? It was one of my childhood Chibli movies with Spirited Away. I rewatched it recently and got all gush at the end scenes of the main characters and the cat in the suit.

Completely random, but one of the details I love about The Cat Returns is the scene where Haru saves Lune. A lot of the time in anime when a character sees someone about to get hit by a car, they do that dramatic full body dive to reach them, which means they’re going to land flat on the ground and unable to move if anything changes. Haru, on the other hand, unships her lacrosse stick, runs full tilt, scoops the cat with the stick as she’s going, and keeps running until they’re safe. I know it only worked because it was a small animal and she happened to have her stick, but I do love that that was her instinct. Grab the kitty and stay going.

Potentially ruining things for the rest of us is hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, I'm sure there won't be too much drama with *checks list* Guy #4 simping for Hot Chick #2 while waiting for his sliders.

I love the lore of Discworld but few of the actual stories and even fewer characters. I think Death is the only storyline I’ve read all of the books. I wish there had been more Cultures books, Small Gods is easily my favourite book up to where I left off (Monstrous Regiment).
I always like the City Watch more than Unseen University but within the Unseen storylines I just don’t really like anyone :(

'Object of fandom'.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? How the heck do you think this could ruin anything for anyone?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone else there has been successfully brainwashed, though. That's the downside.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Should it be "subject of fandom"?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
just like staying at a Disney resort then

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
We get socialized to believe it 'builds character' and when someone suggests that perhaps we don't glorify suffering and make things better for people it gets scoffed at. It's part of the 'stiff upper lip' culture which I get in some ways but mostly it just means you're never meant to talk about actual problems and suffer silently.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it someone you know personally, OP? If so I don't see the problem. Bringing it up randomly at a con would be weird, but this sounds like a personal conversation. And I don't think actors give a shit what random internet communities exist, people on here have always been absurdly paranoid on this topic.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It is such a legitimately charming movie. It's one of my favorites too, Secret OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I might be the only person in fandom who's never watched The Princess Bride, so I never pick up on the references.
