Eh, well, everyone is different. For me it is Susan that makes me go meh, for you it is good old Rincewind.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah pretty much.

Rincewind books are still good but they're clearly the least interesting and least good books in the series for my money. The character himself is simply not at all interesting, a one-note joke who ended up appearing in way too many books. The books are all picaresques which is way less interesting to me than the rest of the books in the series structurally which are usually set in specific interesting locations, have well-worked-out plots and well drawn characters, etc. And I think the Rincewind books are also generally quite a bit more dated.

Does anyone really like him?

In the books he's in, I like the Unseen University much better.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I do. I like the campy freewheeling fun of his books.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, me too!

Same!

I love the lore of Discworld but few of the actual stories and even fewer characters. I think Death is the only storyline I’ve read all of the books. I wish there had been more Cultures books, Small Gods is easily my favourite book up to where I left off (Monstrous Regiment).
I always like the City Watch more than Unseen University but within the Unseen storylines I just don’t really like anyone :(

I spot the sheep!

:thunking: Yeah, he's my least favorite of the themes too.

the problem with rincewind is that the first two of his books are the colour of magic and the light fantastic, which are both universally considered oddities at best, and first impressions stick

Here's a genuinely unpopular one: I quite like Rincewind but I can't stand Sam Vimes.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, it’s not that I can’t stand Vimes, but that I find him too depressing for genuine escapism.

Rincewind hits the perfect tone for when I want a fun adventure story with a liberal sprinkling of jokes.

i like vimes in small doses; the problem is that by the end there were a lot of large doses

Yeah, same. I enjoyed the Rincewind books at first, because I liked the world-building, but upon reading more of them, I'm much more interested in the witches and the city watch stories. I have read and re-read those books, but I haven't re-read a Rincewind book in over two decades.

Discworld was originally written as a parody, Rincewind in particular. As it happens, every other place and character in the universe PTerry created was more interesting than Rincewind himself, and so grew beyond those first stories - and Discworld was born. Rincewind suffers from the fact that his story universe massively outgrew him but his character didn't have enough depth to ever become interesting.

OPPS misfire, sorry

Misfired the misfire comment. OI

yeah, i can't stand any book that features Rincewind heavily. find them dull and uninteresting. everyone has their preferences, and Discworld is luckily stuffed with enough of them that you can pick and choose who you want to read about.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care much for Rincewind either, but he got the series started and I'll appreciate him for that.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don’t have anything against him but he’s the least interesting character in his own books.
