Discworld was originally written as a parody, Rincewind in particular. As it happens, every other place and character in the universe PTerry created was more interesting than Rincewind himself, and so grew beyond those first stories - and Discworld was born. Rincewind suffers from the fact that his story universe massively outgrew him but his character didn't have enough depth to ever become interesting.
