I feel you, nonny. Not quite the same situation but I took in what I thought was a stray cat years back, assuming as much because the poor boy was malnourished, tattered and infested with basically everything. Later found out he belonged to someone a few doors down from us and their reaction to us taking him in was, quote, "fuck it, you can have it." Him and his girlfriend got done for animal neglect a few years after, they had multiple cats and dogs in a similar state who were taken away.

Some people shouldn't have pets.
