I suppose knowledge for knowledge's sake is not a bad thing. Still, I wonder if knowing that Red Cedar is common in two states that I don't anticipate ever spending any time in is taking up valuable space in my mind that could be used for something else.

Lol you'll forget it eventually, but you'll be incredibly good at trivia in the meantime, and at the very least, regarding survival scenarios, I've been told I'd be kept around for my knowledge of random (and seemingly) useless things.
