I do from time to time. Once looked up the average salary of a secretary in the US during the 1930s, I think I even found a source that specified it to the year. I could really just make numbers up but it really mattered to me when I was writing my fic. I also fell into a rabbit hole of what types of clothes people wore and how much food cost too.
