“Boring and obvious” makes sense to me (he’s such a well-known name associated with a certain type of mythologized/nostalgic Britishness, with decent recognition in the US and other markets)… but I can’t quite tell if you think he was bad casting in other ways.

I think beyond the fact that it's boring and obvious, Fry's persona reads as intrinsically arch and ironic to me in a way that I don't think is right for the character. So the character feels tonally off, and it reinforces the idea that he was cast for no other reason than because he's already well-known and he has the right body type.

I think that might be some preconceptions you have of Fry? I found his performance here to be gentler than some (most) of his other roles.

I found Patton Oswald to stick out far more. He did a great job voice acting, but it was always very much "Patton Oswald the crow named Matthew" and not "this crow named Matthew."

Agreed. Fry worked very well for me in that role, while Patton Oswald really stuck out.

+1

Sounds like a preconception to me. He didn't seem arch and ironic in this role at all. Kind of the opposite actually - very earnest and in awe of everything.

TRUE about Oswald. Honest Trailers called him "Patton Cawswald," lol

He's twee, which is basically arch and ironic dressed up as earnestness
