YEAH

It's a huge pet peeve of mine because especially in my current fandom hyperfixation, I'm NOT interested in modern AUs, and when writers don't bother to even keep the *canon tone*, let alone research what life was like even thirty-five years ago?

Pretty sure we're talking about the same fandom here lol

But, yeah, it's really frustrating. I think it would be less of an issue if it seemed like people were even trying to think about the fact that these characters aren't from the modern day, too.

If it's a big fandom set thirty-five years ago where we in fact KNOW how a couple of canon queer characters are dealing with their identities and a LOT of young fans who don't know how to write to that, then we sure are fkjfslkl

It's so frustrating as a Rural Gay of a Certain Age (I mean, I was a toddler at the time the last season was set but small towns kept that mindset long enough for it to be Relatable), like... the stuff that's funny in a 'fake quotes'/shitpost is SO grating in fic, there's so much that's changed, and so many HUGE things that people just don't grasp.

Thiiiis.
In all of my recent fandoms I've seen fics there characters randomly say that they are (insert contemporary label) while being from like middle fucking ages
