I'm...not sure that that's clear.

I can't find it but there was an interview with Matt Damien who was talking about the general problem with the movie industry as it currently is. I'm probably going to badly word it - but basically he was talking about how in the 90s/2000s making money from film releases didn't just count for how many people went to see them at the cinema but also from the money made with home releases.
With streaming being the option more people are heading towards than actually owning media, the focus is now more on getting as many people as possible to see a movie even if its just the once. With less chance of making back the money, there are producers and corporations less likely to put money into projects that don't have a guarantee of success (which is why despite so many remakes and franchise revivals in recent years have mostly been so awful, but can be relied on to get the attention of old fans or people who have heard of these previously well-praised movies).

So with Disney going down the path of 'bad publicity is better than no publicity' route its hardly a surprise.

Here's the video of that Matt Damon interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx8F5Imd8A8

Yes! Thank you that's the one :D

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
The Matt Damon interview you're talking about was on Hot Ones, I believe.

Capitalism ruins everything.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
This secret is very aesthetically pleasing

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
also they use for this minorities. Yeah, fun

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
What's even worse, they're hiding behind the actors. The studio lets them take the audience's ire, instead of the people behind the scenes who are actually at fault. Gross.

This
It's actors who deal with the fall out. Often enough really young actors

+1000000

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
It only works as long as there are angry racists and angry sexists to support it. So, ditch the sexism and racism and we're all good. You good now, OP, you angry little reactionary upset that you are no longer the customer but the product, you good?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
congratulations! while sitting on your high horse thinking you've secured a nice gotcha, what you've actually done is proved the op's point - that it doesn't matter if the product sucks for other reasons, or if the cast are good or bad at they do, because now the ONLY reasons for people to hate it are because they're racist sexist shits and can thus be loudly degraded and dismissed as such, and the louder you shout that the more publicity you draw

racebending then saying "look how progressive we are" isn't progressive, it's lazy, and calling it out isn't always racism - that's not to say that there aren't quite a few people out there who do hate it solely for prejudicial reasons, but there are a lot of reasons to hate what disney are doing

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP would call them "reactionnary" if they belonged to that group.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Congrats on missing the point.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*squints*
I sure if trolling or just particularly egregious bad-faith response.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's trolling, this exact same opinion shows up - almost certainly from this exact same person - every time this topic comes up

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i know enough people who genuinely think like this to believe that this is neither, that they honestly believe that any attack on the strategy is nothing but cover for some (scratch that, probably all) forms of -ism

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
it's not just disney, alas

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. If Disney were sincere in its commitments to a social justice program and willing to go to bat against the racist and sexist trolls and tell them "If you're so mad, our movies aren't for you," then fine. But it doesn't. Instead, it sidelines its own POC actors in response to racist abuse, vetoes the LGBT plotlines of its LGBT directors, shies away from an old-fashioned and extremely backwards but still present white/black interracial relationship taboo, puts the burden of making statements and defending themselves against the trolls on individual actors and directors, etc. I don't appreciate hate being stirred up against people like me just for the sake of more buzz around a movie. Classic scapegoating behavior.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The only way to win is not to play. That's why the last live action Disney movie I saw was Cinderella in 2015, and I refuse to give them any money or social media attention even when I think the movie *might* actually be good.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
precisely

outside of this thread, i haven't expressed an opinion on any of this shit on the internet - i refuse to provide them the oxygen they're desperately fishing for
