I think technically, books that are collected single issues are collections, not graphic novels; graphic novels are things that are originally conceived and published as a book-sized volume.

But also, when a lot of people say "graphic novels", what they actually mean is "comic books that are good". Which is silly, and also has nothing to do with the actual meaning of the term.
